Industrialised chicken production is far from organic agriculture prinicples. Still of interest is a more sustainable utilisation of by-products, e.g. hydrolysation of feathers for proteins, or extraction of food grade oil from chicken bones. Such approaches were studied in the bioeconomy-project "CYCLE" (2013-2017).

Energy efficiency of organic pear production in greenhouses in China Organic Eprints
Liu, Y.; Langer, Vibeke; Høgh-Jensen, Henning; Egelyng, Henrik.
The development of organic protected cultivation taking place in densely populated areas has raised the question whether it is an environmentally friendly production system. The present study investigated energy consumption of organic pear production in two production systems, namely in traditional Chinese solar greenhouse and in the open field. In both production systems, energy output/input ratio and energy productivity were used as indicators to determine the energy efficiency; yield, cost of production, net economic return pear land area unit and benefit/cost ratio were used to evaluate economic productivity. The analysis results indicated that energy input and energy output in the solar greenhouse were higher than in open field per land area; whereas...

Energy use in organic, green and conventional pear producting systems - cases from China Organic Eprints
Liu, Yuexian; Langer, Vibeke; Høgh-Jensen, Henning; Egelyng, Henrik.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the differences in the energy consumption between the production of certified organic pear, green food certified pear, and conventional pear in two areas in China. Data were collected from interviews with farmers during 2007 and 2008. Energy inputs were significantly higher in organic systems compared with conventional and green systems. Fertilizer was the most important contributor to energy consumption in all three farming systems. Three calculation methods for energy value of manure have been found in the literature: substitution method, by-product method, and thermal method. The choise of various calculation methods for estimating the energy value of manure turns out to have great influence on the results in...

Glocalisation of Organic Agriculture: Options for Countries in the South Organic Eprints
Egelyng, Henrik.
This paper analyzes and discusses aspects of the current globalisation of certified organic agriculture (COA), Northern institutional frameworks for certified organic agriculture and differences between Northern and Southern organic agriculture. It presents a preliminary approach to explore how far COA is institutionally embedded at national levels in developing countries, in terms of involving civil society, market actors and national government agencies, and it applies the same approach to an explorative study of China. Finally, the paper discusses the relevance of certified organic agriculture for development policy agendas.

Institutional Environments for Certified Organic Agriculture: Enabling Development, Smallholders Livelihood and Public Goods for Southern Environments? Organic Eprints
Egelyng, Henrik.
This paper presents the case for research on institutional environments for organically certified agriculture in developing countries. Observing that some analyses hold Southern organic agriculture as pro-poor and perhaps also more energy efficient than fossil fuel dependent industrialized agriculture, the paper explores differences and similarities in the policy rationale of promoting certified organics in North and South. Based on analysis of institutional environments for COA in Brazil and China, the paper proceed to identify some challenges, opportunities and policy options for strengthening not only certified organic agriculture per se, but an environmentally and socially sustainable food system, providing smallholder livelihoods and rural development.

New challenges in underprivileged regions calls for people-centred research for development Organic Eprints
Høgh-Jensen, Henning; Oelofse, Myles; Egelyng, Henrik.
The need for enhancing food production and availability in underprivileged regions of the world requires the attention of scientists. This paper explores the possibilities for rethinking Agricultural Research for Development (AR4D) in the light of new challenges characterized by a high degree of scientific uncertainty and associated with intense political differences of interest. New challenges that particularly influence food production in underprivileged regions include global climate change, globalisation of food chains, and emerging low-carbon energy systems. We argue that by applying the people-centred Sustainable Livelihoods Approach as a research paradigm in AR4D, researchers may be more successful in producing knowledge that is useful to...

Organic Agriculture: A New Field of International Development Policy Organic Eprints
Egelyng, Henrik; Høgh-Jensen, Henning; Kledal, Paul Rye; Halberg, Niels.
This paper reviews strategically selected global policy documents and development literature and analyse perspectives on the role of organic agriculture (OA) as a possible vehicle for sustainable development in developing countries. It shows that not only has compliance assessed organics made entry in terms of projects and programmes in many LICs. OA is also gaining position in formal policies and strategies of international donor agencies and organisations. If agriculture is generally “back” in development business, organic farming has certainly “arrived”.

Organic Agriculture as Livelihood Strategy: A Case Study in a Rural Community of Southern Brazil Organic Eprints
Moreno-Peñaranda, Raquel; Egelyng, Henrik.
This paper presents the findings of a case study of a Brazilian community pursuing a livelihood strategy based on certified organic agriculture. Using the sustainable rural livelihoods framework, the paper identifies three different organic livelihood strategies involving varying degrees of capitals. The paper concludes that understanding the implications of these different organic strategies and their rationales is a prerequisite for policy-makers to tailor policies and programmes aiming to assist rural communities benefit from organic agriculture as a vehicle for advancing rural development.

Organic Agriculture in a Development Policy Perspective Organic Eprints
Egelyng, Henrik; Halberg, Niels; Høgh-Jensen, Henning.
Farmers growing food with high eco-efficiency may be seen cultivating peace by reducing competition among nations for oil and as producers of other public goods: biodiverse landscapes and ecosystem services with more soil fertility, less water use and less pollution. How does Organic agriculture (OA) fare globally on eco-efficiency? Are most African farmers eco-efficient – or may eco-efficient farmers be found everywhere? As OA develops throughout the planet, what does Denmark do beyond Europe? Is organic farming part of our development policy? Do we dilligently share our comparative advantages in this field with developing nations? This article pursues these basic questions.

Perceived Constraints and Opportunities for Brazilian Smallholders Going Organic: a case of coffee in the state of Minas Gerais Organic Eprints
Nordlund, Elsebeth; Egelyng, Henrik.
This paper presents the findings of an analysis of the perceived rationales of smallholders for declining or entering organically certified coffee production, in the case Poço Fundo region, Minas Gerais. Based on group interviews and questionnaires, the rationale for farmers who declined organic production were found to be avoidance of perceived risk of harvest failure associated with the process of convertion from conventional to organic coffee production. Rationales for farmers who entered organic production included non-market benefits such as environmental quality and life quality enhancement.

The Circular Economy of a Local Organic Food Chain: Xiedao in Beijing Organic Eprints
Liu, Yuexian; Høgh-Jensen, Henning; Egelyng, Henrik.
The local organic food market in China is growing and socalled leisure agriculture has been widely accepted and advocated in urban areas as a positive means of relaxation. This paper presents an analysis of a local organic food chain based on leisure agriculture and seeks to explain development of organic food in Urban China using the theoretical frame of the Circular Economy. The study uses a local organic food chain involving Xiedao as a case. In conclusion, the paper provides an estimate of the energy use efficiency of the chain.

The Institutional Environment for Certified Organic Agriculture in China: A review, some landscaping and a framework agenda for more analysis Organic Eprints
Egelyng, Henrik; Yu Hui, Qiao; Li, Luping.
From a development research perspective this paper presents a framework for exploring the Chinese case of certified organic agriculture (COA). Departing from an analysis of the globalisation of certified organic agriculture, we first present our theoretical approach and then review the small, but recent existing social science literature on ecological-green-organic agriculture in China. One line of inquiry is exploring how far developments in COA are driven by export aspirations, market actors and their agencies and how far the same developments already involve civil society and domestically oriented government agencies. We proceed to briefly outline the development of the formal institutional landscape of Chinese organic farming. Finally, we present a...
